Bernard
P. Kea, Sr., P.E. – 1976 to 2003
Bernard P. Kea, Sr. joined Community Planning in 1967, following nine years of service as a Design Engineer for the City and County of Honolulu's Department of Public Works Sewer Division and the State of Hawaii's Department of Transportation Highways Division.
Between the late 1960s and early 1980s, Mr. Kea completed a succession of noteworthy projects which now cover the valleys and ridges from Aiea to Pearl City. Under his guidance, Community Planning planned and engineered a multitude of residential subdivisions, apartment-condominium complexes, industrial parks, golf courses and retail shopping centers. Known today as Pearlridge, Newtown, Royal Summit, and Waiau - these districts include Pearlridge Shopping Center, Pearl Country Club, Kaonohi Ridge, Newtown Estates, The Crowne, The Crest and The Heights at Wailuna, and Waimalu Industrial Park, and were developed by Herbert Horita, Lear Sigler, Lusk Hawaii, Castle & Cooke, Mervin Gilliland, and Joseph Pao of Hawaiian Pacific Industries.
Throughout subsequent decades and with the advent of master planned communities on Oahu, Mr. Kea became involved with such award-winning projects as Waipio by Gentry, Waikele, and Ko Olina Resort & Marina. He began managing the integration of subdivision lot-layout and total infrastructure planning, often serving as the person responsible for determining if it was practical or even feasible to build on selected parcels. Other distinguished projects completed by CP&E under his auspices include Waialae Iki, Crosspointe, Kawela Plantations, Village Pokai Bay, Sand Island Industrial Park, and Dole Cannery Industrial Park.

As an adept problem-solver, with extensive career accomplishments, he earned tremendous respect throughout the engineering, development, and business communities in Hawaii and was recognized as an authority in the land development process. With the presentation of their prestigious O'o Award, the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce recognized Mr. Kea in 1996 for his exemplary achievements in business.
In 2003, he stepped down as President but remained actively involved in planning new communities for the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands until his retirement in 2008.
